California drivers who are re-registering a branded vehicle need to have a brake and lamp inspection to receive a certificate of compliance that the vehicle is in safe operating condition before the DMV will issue a title to the owner of the vehicle. The brake and lamp inspections and certification must be performed by a repair shop that is certified to perform these inspections.

CA DMV requires that a State Licensed Inspection Station conduct a thorough and complete examination of the critical components which may have been possibly damaged or misaligned due to an accident or as a result of theft damage.

Successfully issued certificates are good for 90 days to be presented to the requesting agency.
