Shocks & Struts

Shocks & Struts

The shocks and struts are part of your vehicle’s suspension system. The suspension system is the system whereby your car is able to compensate for uneven road conditions in order to provide the driver and passengers with a smooth ride, absent of significant bumping and jarring.

The two major components of the suspension system are the shocks (shock absorber) and struts.

The shock absorber is the part responsible for dissipating kinetic energy in a manner that minimizes or eliminates the effect that that kinetic energy has on occupants of the vehicle. If you run over a bump in the road, the shock absorbers work to redirect the effect that bump has on all occupants. If you’ve run over a speed bump and felt it, you can thank your shocks that you didn’t feel it more.

The struts are similar to the shocks, but the key difference is that while the shocks absorb kinetic energy from below, the struts stabilize a vehicle from the forces caused by sharp turns, in effect keeping a vehicle level similar to the sway bar.

If you need suspension service, we work on all vehicle makes and models, but our specialty is foreign makes and models. If you need suspension service, strut replacement, or shock repair come to Mr. Car Auto Care.
