Wheel Cylinders

Wheel Cylinders

Brake cylinders are parts in the braking system; in a car or truck, there are five cylinders, four wheel cylinders (slaves) and one master cylinder. Each one is basically a hydraulic device that exerts pressure on the brake caliper mechanism in order to stop the wheels from spinning through the use of friction.

The master cylinder is so called because it is the cylinder upon which the brake pedal works and through which the individual wheel cylinders are influenced. Each cylinder is relatively simple in construction. They are simply pistons filled with brake fluid. When the plunger portion of the wheel cylinder is pushed down, it displaces the brake fluid and creates the hydraulic pressure necessary to press the calipers down hard enough to stop the wheels from turning.

If you experience difficulty braking, it might be the fault of either the master cylinder or one of the wheel cylinders. If the hydraulics fail due to a mechanical problem or low brake fluid, the caliper device will not be pressed down hard enough to stop the vehicle in a timely manner. If the master cylinder is the source of the problem, then the wheel cylinders will not receive adequate pressure to do their job and none of your wheels will be able to stop quickly.
